The CPAP treatment involves using a special CPAP machine which has a CPAP mask attached to the CPAP machine by a hose. This mask needs to be placed on the face during the night. The CPAP mask must be adjusted to your face so that there is no air leakage in order to provide optimal treatment. There can be a number of reasons why you might have mask leakage. With your CPAP machine turned on, pull your CPAP mask away from your face so that the seal can be properly inflated. Then gently set the CPAP mask back into place against your face. Another common problem occurs when your CPAP mask is too tight. Loosen the head straps to allow proper inflation of the seal and then set the mask back into place against your face. Many CPAP users are under the impression that a CPAP mask should be leak free 100% of the time, but that is a misconception, as all CPAP masks will leak from time to time. Eventually you will need to readjust your mask if a leak occurs.
Which CPAP mask will work with my machine?
All CPAP masks and CPAP tubing are made to a standard size. Because of this, you can choose any mask to use with your CPAP machine. You should choose your CPAP mask based on previous experiences with a mask, a doctor’s recommendation based upon your sleep study, or suggestions from people you know who use a CPAP machine.
Which type of mask should I choose?
This is a personal decision as it varies on an individual basis. There are many types of masks, including the traditional nasal masks, alternative nasal masks, full face masks (for those patients who have problems with mouth breathing or leaking from the mouth), and nasal pillow masks. Each of these masks has its’ own benefits and drawbacks. Some may work for some people, and not for others. For the best possible choice, you should stick with what has worked for you in the past.
