How Can You Optimize Your CPAP Treatment?

In addition to healthy sleep patterns, remember that it is very important for your sleep apnea treatment to use your CPAP machine every night, or even when you’re having a nap. This will ensure you achieve the full benefit of your CPAP treatment.

Here are some important things to remember:

Before sleeping

  1. Avoid things that may prevent you from sleeping such as smoking/nicotine, alcohol, heavy exercise, large meals or spicy foods a few hours before bedtime
  2. Avoid caffeine 6 hours before bedtime
  3. Avoid over-the-counter pills that will affect sleep or the misuse of sleeping pills
  4. Practice relaxing activities such as yoga, drink herbal tea or have a glass of warm milk, or read a book
Create a restful sleep environment
  1. Do not read in bed or watch TV in bed
  2. Have a quiet and dark bedroom
  3. Keep your bedroom fairly cool, ideally between 64-68 degrees Fahrenheit or 18-20 degrees Celsius

How to Optimize Your Treatment

  1. Use your CPAP machine all night and every night, as well as when you have a nap
  2. Take your CPAP machine with you when you are on holidays or away on business
  3. Try and control your weight

Great website and very helpful tips! I am guilty of not having a restful sleep environment and guilty of doing a few of the things you listed before going to bed.
Ahhh I need to change the way I do things, because i know that I stay up way later then I should. But anyway I’ll use some of these tips to improve my sleeping habits.

    All the best

My dad had sleep apnea and I suspect my girlfriend does too. She’s overweight and I think that is a contributing factor, plus she works third shift so her sleep cycle is way out of wack. When my dad was first diagnosed, it sleep apnea was a fairly new idea. He also had heart issues and I wonder if the two were connected.

Great site with lots of good information.

Thanks very much for your comments. It’s surprising how many people are now being diagnosed with sleep apnea. My understanding is that sleep apnea and heart issues are connected.

Hi Shawn, my father suffers from sleep apnea, he’s always awake till 4 or 5 am. Sleeps a little during the day and that’s it. I’ll have to tell him to have a look at your site, especially since you said that ” sleep apnea and heart issues can be connected”. Thank you for the info.

      Hi Jazmin,
I appreciate your comments, thanks! I never had the problem of being awake until the early hours of the morning. My problem is that I was always exhausted, even after being “asleep” for 8 hours. Just goes to show you that the quality of my sleep was terrible. Thank goodness for my CPAP machine. It has made a world of difference for me. I hope that your father finds the information on my site helpful.

These are great information to use. As a former Nurse I am aware of the conditions when suffering from Sleep Apnea.
Not pleasant at all for the person who has to deal with it.
The article of yours really depict the problem correct and what else can be done.

Hi Shawn, Your site has been informative for us. Our son-in-law has sleep apnea and uses a CPAP. Don’t really know what type of face mask that he uses, though. We will give him this site to check out. We’re sure that there are some things that may help him even more than just the CPAP.
    Thanks for the information.

Thanks for your comments Chuck and Evelyn! Has your son-in-law had sleep apnea very long? I just started using my dad’s CPAP machine in August 2015, after he passed away. I’ve only used the CPAP mask that my dad had and it seems to work for me. It has made a huge difference for me. My wife is especially grateful that I don’t snore anymore! I hope your son-in-law finds something of interest on my site.

Your site has a lot of great information for people suffering from sleep apnea. It is so imperatively important that people with sleep apnea get treatment and then follow through with it. Sleep apnea can lead to heart arrhythmia’s especially prevalent if left untreated. I see it in our electrophysiology lab almost daily. I hope this site will be a great encouragement for anyone struggling with this illness and motivation for continued compliance in their treatment plan.
